Medical training

Mr Makki’s practice covers a full range of arthroscopic (keyhole) and open shoulder and elbow surgery including subacromial decompression shoulder stabilisation for instability and dislocation, rotator cuff tendon repair, arthroscopic biceps tenodesis, shoulder replacement and upper limb trauma.  He also undertakes a broad range of elbow, wrist and hand procedures.

Mr Makki has a special expertise in one of the latest arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder called “the superior capsular reconstruction” whereby a piece of human tissue called Dermal allograft is used to replace the irreparable rotator cuff tendon. He adopted his own innovative technique in this procedure and presented his work at the international level.

He qualified from the Lebanese university medical school in 2001 and holds MD degree with a gold medal in the graduation thesis. He completed his basic surgical training in the East of England Deanery and underwent later a specialist training on the Mersey Deanery rotation. He developed an interest in upper limb surgery and undertook higher training at the internationally renowned Wrightington Upper Limb Unit. He subsequently pursued a one-year advanced training fellowship in shoulder surgery in Manchester.

In addition to his surgical qualifications, Mr Makki has a BSc in biology and a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine. He has a keen interest in research and has published several articles (27 studies so far) in scientific journals. More recently, he has published a chapter on shoulder arthroplasty in a major shoulder textbook. He presented research at national and international scientific meetings. He is a faculty member on the Wrightington basic science course for higher surgical trainees.

He is currently the Lead of “Enhanced Recovery Program” at St Albans City Hospital (West Hertfordshire NHS Trust) which helps a speedy recovery from upper limb surgery.

Personal details

Mr Makki enjoys travelling, running and sports in general. He likes classical music and has recently started learning the violin.

Personal details and training

Mark grew up in Wales and went to Cambridge University (Emmanuel College) where he met his wife, Philippa, who is also a hospital doctor. They have two grown-up children. He is a keen cyclist and has taken part in the last 6 ‘Etapes du Tour’, avoiding the ‘broom-wagon’ on all occasions. He also completed the London marathon in 2010. He also enjoys skiing with his family and has done so since doing a fellowship in Italy where the whole family relocated to Tuscany for a year (1999-2000). He speaks reasonable Italian and also took an advanced French for doctors course at the College of Physicians many years ago. He enjoys art, music and is a very keen amateur jazz trumpet player.

Mark graduated from Cambridge University and Addenbrookes’ Clinical School in 1988. He did his basic surgical training at the Westminster Hospital, followed by a research post at the Royal Free Hospital.  He is Fellowship trained in Hand Surgery, Trauma and Limb Reconstruction which he completed at University of Pisa, Italy and the Plastic Surgery Department of Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.  He completed his senior orthopaedic training at King’s College Hospital.

Mark was first appointed a consultant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich in 2001. He was then a Consultant at King’s College Hospital for 12 years, where he was Ortho-Plastics lead, Governance lead for Major Trauma and had a research interest in accelerated fracture healing. Mark left the NHS in 2015 to concentrate on his private practice at London Sports Orthopaedics, where he is a Partner and Medical Director.

Mark specialises in treating musicians with hand & wrist problems and is one of the UK’s leading experts in treating patients working within the performing arts industry.  He has a regular clinic at the British Association for Performance Arts Medicine (BAPAM).
