Welcome to Musicians Hand Clinic
I suppose a sports orthopaedics company may be an unlikely place to find a hand surgeon who specialises in treating musicians.
I trained as a general orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in trauma but I’ve always had a specialist interest in hand surgery. For most of my 13 years at Kings College Hospital I was doing general orthopaedics and trauma with a sub specialist interest in the upper limb first, and later, hand and wrist surgery. This followed on from my hand and wrist fellowship in East Grinstead before I became a consultant. This is a very well known teaching centre for hand surgery and I enjoyed that part of my training very much.
After joining London Sports Orthopaedics in 2014 and then leaving the NHS, much of my work has been hand surgery, and our local demographic are city workers who often do sports in the evenings and at weekends. I inherited a specialist practise for musicians from two surgeons who had already done much of the hard work in setting up this type of practise in London (Ian Winspur and John White). I am a keen amateur trumpet player playing mostly in the jazz style. This, therefore, was a perfect fit for me at this stage of my career.
I see about 900 new patients a year (and a similar number of follow up patients). Musicians now form about 1/4 or 1/3 of my practise on most weeks. The other two thirds are, firstly: otherwise young and healthy office workers who do quite a lot of sport after work; and the other third are unrelated to sport or music and are much more general orthopaedic problems.
