On Thursday 31st January and Friday 1st February the LSO Knee Team attended the 2019 Annual Meeting of the UK Biological Knee Society.
The BKS was founded 5 years ago by a small group of like-minded Knee Surgeons who were very much against the concept of the ‘binary knee surgeon’, who could offer just an arthroscopic ‘washout’ or a knee replacement, with pretty much nothing in-between. Instead, they promoted the concept of ‘the portfolio knee surgeon’, who has a wide range of different treatment options available that can be tailored to the specific needs of the individual patient, with the necessary skill-set to achieve the best possible outcome for each patient.
The BKS is headed by our own Knee Surgeon and LSO’s Managing Partner, Ian McDermott, who is the BKS President, and all of LSO’s knee surgeons are BKS members.
The BKS holds annual meetings, and this year’s meeting was at Man Utd’s grounds at Old Trafford, in Manchester, which was a spectacular setting.
Ian McDermott gave three talks at this year’s BKS meeting, on:
- Biological enhancement of ACL grafts with Vivostat PRF – for further info CLICK HERE
- Meniscal transplantation: what is success? – for further info CLICK HERE
- Meniscal repair: what kit do I use? – for further info CLICK HERE
At this year’s BKS meeting, the BKS Exec were delighted to welcome Dr Pat Smith, from Missouri. Dr Smith is a world renowned knee surgeon who has published extensively and who has helped drive surgical innovation, particularly in the fields of ACL surgery and orthobiologics. Dr Smith has been a member of the Columbia Orthopaedic Group since 1986, and in 2010 he was appointed Director of the Sports Medicine Division at the University of Missouri. He was been the Head Team Physician for The University of Missouri since 1991, and in 2015 he was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
Dr Smith gave talks about ‘Internal bracing for ACL reconstruction’, ‘Primary ACL repair’ and ‘The use of PRP in orthopaedics’, and he also gave an outstanding live cadaveric video demo on ‘The use of quads tendon grafts for ACL reconstruction’.
Dr Smith was awarded Lifetime Honorary International Membership of the BKS in recognition of his tremendous contributions to this year’s meeting and to ‘Biological Knee Surgery’ in general.
