On 30th and 31st January, the Knee Team from LSO attended the 6th Annual Meeting of the UK Biological Knee Society, in Cambridge.
The setting for this year’s meeting was spectacular, at Downing College, and the meeting was hosted by Mr Joel Melton, specialist Knee Surgeon in Cambridge.
The 2-day meeting was packed with specialist knee surgeons from across the UK, and beyond, with a fantastic faculty of both UK national experts and famous international speakers, including:
- Professor Magnus Högström, from Sweden, talking about the Episealer focal resurfacing implant
- Professor Stefan Lohmander, also from Sweden, discussing the role of non-surgical management for degenerative meniscal tears
- Professor Ulrich Schneider, from Heidelberg, presenting a novel form of gold-activated PRP: Goldic
- Professor Roman Seil, from Luxembourg, presenting his experience of periarticular osteotomy around the knee.
Our own Knee Surgeon, Mr Ian McDermott, gave two very well-received presentations on:
- The role of surgery in the management of degenerate meniscal tears — CLICK HERE to read more, and
- The dangers of the dodgy ‘stem cell’ salesmen and ‘Rogue Stem Cell Clinics’ — CLICK HERE to read more.
Ian was the co-founder of the UK Biological Knee Society, and has been President of the Society for the last 6 years. This year Ian handed over Presidency of the Society to Professor Mike McNicholas, who now takes up the mantle of leading the Society forward. In recognition of his enormous contributions to the Society, Ian was awarded Honorary Lifetime Membership of the BKS, which is an accolade held by only a tiny number of other leading Knee Surgeons. Congratulations Ian!!
